21 facts in comparison
Two Wi-Fi 7 mesh flagships that make the same money buy different things, and the first thing to hold onto is the pack size: three Orbi units against two ZenWiFi units. Coverage figures follow node count as much as radio quality, and the Orbi's higher rating comes partly from having an extra node to place.
Per unit, the ASUS is the more generous piece of hardware. Each BQ16 Pro carries five Ethernet ports to the Orbi's three, a USB port the Orbi lacks, and a quad-band radio set with a higher wireless class. It is also lighter and shorter, which matters for anything that has to sit in a living room. Two of them will cover a large house; three Orbis will cover a larger one.
The Orbi's answer is its dedicated backhaul. Netgear reserves a radio for the link between base and satellites, so the far nodes never share airtime with your devices. ASUS uses one of its bands as backhaul when there is no cable, but it is not exclusively reserved in the same way, and over long wireless distances that is where the Orbi holds its throughput better.
Software leans the other way. ASUS bundles its security suite and VPN features without a subscription and its firmware is the more configurable; Netgear's Armor is included with the Orbi and its app is simpler.
For a large, hard-to-wire house, three Orbi nodes with a reserved backhaul are the safer coverage. For a house that can run Ethernet between two nodes, or that wants ports and a USB drive on every node and a more capable firmware, two ZenWiFi units do the job with hardware to spare - and leave money on the table.
Head-to-head points: every spec is scaled between these products only, so a product can score high here and modestly on its own page, where the VS Score measures it against the median of its class.
The spec sheet pulls in both directions. These are the gaps big enough to shape the decision — with the actual figures, and what each one means in real-world use.
The total home size the included units are rated to cover.
Wired ports on each mesh unit for TVs, consoles or desktops.
How many mesh units come in the pack.
A USB port for shared drives or printers.
A lighter unit is easier to place around the home.
